Incorrect. Before the update, balloons were mostly used when the opponent sent in mortars, to break down a wall, or against steam giants Using them to conserve gyro never made sense -

I don't know about before the update, but I know I've used balloons recently to conserve gyros. It made for some ugly rounds, but they helped me take down a level 48 wall in 4 rounds. -
