I am familiar with this error. It has absolutely nothing to do with ANY VPN! It's a bug directly related to logging into the forum.
You can access the Board via the link atop of your game when you're logged in:
If you don't get logged in, close the window and try again.
ANY attempt to login with user name and password will produce the aforementioned error.

I can sign into the forum (which is presumably why you see me posting), but cannot sign into the actual game.

Please stop posting absolutely wrong information.
I'm actually not doing any of that.
This error message appears only in case if the IP address you are trying to sign in from is marked up as a proxy/VPN. And of course also if the entered details are incorrect.
"Unrecognized email address or invalid password. Please try again or click on “Forgotten your Password”."
This happens when you login too many times to too many accounts from the same IP in a relatively short time.
This is a limitation of about 25-30 logins from the same IP introduced by Gameforge hoping they will prevent using VPNs, bots, scripts and cheating in game. VPNs are not that easy to track and identify so they limit your number of logins. You may have noticed the emails related to your logins that you receive from time to time.
The resolution is simple: change IP by resetting your router and you got instant access. This works for those with dynamic IP. Too bad for those with static IP because they cannot change it.
If you real notice this issue without using any VPN or proxies please get in touch with support department as only they are able to check what is going on for your account.
